I read with my water bottle right next to my Kindle, but I wish I had thought to put on my backpack and hiking boots as I traveled the Camino with Helen and Bert. So many of my friends and relatives have found this such an enriching experience, I had always hoped to do it. I am afraid with two replaced hips, it would not be too practical. “Second Wind” certainly gave me a feeling of participation. It was an excellent read.
Nancy Jo 2014 The authors have successfully written a novel which encapsulates many of the physical, psychological, social and spiritual adventures along the Camino. Having walked the Camino this past year I welcomed Bert and Helen's conversations as a lovely reminiscence of my own experiences from the mundane of the "ensalada mixta" to the profound experiences of transitioning from a tourist on a strange vacation to a pilgrim encountering moments of awe from the surreal beautiful light along a hillside to moments of profound connection as other pilgrim's stories entwined with my own evolving journey and understanding. For anyone wondering what the Camino experience may be like I would highly recommend this novel as a well-grounded perspective on what a long walk along the Way of Saint James might be like.

I wanted to let you know how much I have enjoyed your book. I have saved the very last piece of the trek to read tonight and will feel sad when it's over. I am physically unable to even dream of such a journey, but have loved walking along with Helen and Bert. As they agreed, life is about the journey itself, not the final destination. Ray and I say that when we travel-- we are about the journey always. Thanks so much for a great story!

I recently finished the first chapters of your book. I've read approximately ten books on the Camino over the last few years. Your book is unique in a number of ways. Seeing as all the others were personal memoirs of actual pilgrims, I liked the fact that you used fictional characters based on real people and real experiences. I also liked that your characters were more mature. The retirement perspective was also unique.
While the above differentiated your book, the telling of the actual journey was spot on. I felt I was walking the Camino again along with Bert and Helen. Always, great memories. Looking forward to reading the rest. Great read. Nina 2013 |
I have started your book and am eager to read more. Because I have walked the road Helen and Bert are travelling - I have this strange feeling that I am there with them. You have included many details that I experienced - many of which I'd forgotten. Reading your work lights them up like they happened only yesterday. My personal experience with the Camino must be colouring my sense of connection. I bet your feedback from people who have not done the trek will be completely different from those who have made it to Santiago. Your work - style, story, characters, believability - is clearly at a level that some other authors can only dream about. Your writing is easily read and absorbed. I also like the few pictures you've included in the early episodes. They are excellent and certainly help the reader connect with the players and place. I think your introduction to the "what's next in life" thread is subtle, and I look forward to reading further on the matter. All in all . . . well done.

I have just finished reading Second Wind on the Way of Saint James. It made me wish I could have done even more of the Camino when I went with my friend. We only did portions --- and with a group. We were "those who rode on a bus" for part of the way. I had some inner merriment about that as I read the book. Anyway---great story---I loved it. Mary, one of the “Fluffy Towel” folks 2013 |
I have had the most interesting week because of your book. My book club is reading Wild by Cheryl Strayed so I have been reading your book side by side with Wild. Though I think Wild is beautifully written, I could identify with your fictional characters even more closely than I could with the real person in Wild. Your characters had purpose even though they may not have been sure of what that might have been. They were very aware that they needed to help themselves. Thank you so much for a valuable read.
