Some of the most rewarding experiences of the Camino come before you ever set foot on the trail. Learning about the Camino, making plans, sharing with friends, and acquiring gear are all fun and memorable experiences, and for us many of our training sessions have produced their own special pleasures. |
Here is our story: San Felasco Hammock State Preserve, a large wooded expanse near our home, has been one of our favorite training spots. With miles of pedestrian-only trails, it offers a variety of options for hiking that make getting into shape its own adventure. We've taken to calling the walks there our own "Camino de San Felasco." |
We like a six mile trail, and when our training has reached its most ambitious, a month more or less before we are to begin the Camino, we combine that one with another trail of five miles, after having our lunch at a midway picnic shelter. The distances are right, and it is good preparation for the real thing. |
We get to experience autumn color, occasional gopher tortoises, and in the spring, fringe trees and other botanical delights. Our novel, Second Wind, begins with Bert and Helen leaving for Spain and the Camino. The previews on the Second Wind tab will give you glimpses of them during the previous six months as they train and prepare for the adventure. |
