In Virginia, James got some fun pics of Pam and her backpack.
In Florida, Peg was treated to a beautiful flock of Ibises on her training walk.
We are getting eager to start the real deal.

Fall temperatures have finally arrived both in Florida and in Virginia. They brought Elaine a cold, thankfully a full week before we cross the pond so she will be fully recovered.

Peg cleaned up her photos on her phone to be sure there is room for all the Camino pics that are coming.
Elaine decided our new goal is to "stay healthy and maintain our fitness level." Pam ordered a new poncho, just because . . . as she said . . .the Camino makes you do it even when you already have one and a raincoat and rain pants! It is always good to live near a university if you want steps to climb! Elaine and Peg think those steps compete pretty darn well with ours at Devil’s Millhopper.
Training Continues
I am back to full strength on my strained calf. Elaine and I walked a few miles and then climbed down and up at Devils Millhopper. I look happier than I did in the previous post! We have three weeks to go! Yikes. I am not feeling as ready as I want to at this point. Two weeks ago, I stepped down wrong in the swimming pool and strained my calf. That has put a crimp on my training walks. I hope my pool exercises can keep me from losing readiness. Staying off it wasn’t helping enough and I was able to get an appointment with an orthopedic doctor whom I liked a lot. He gave me stretches to do instead of staying off it. I am feeling so much better with this regime! The photo sure looks like I am not jumping for joy with my recovery yet. I felt better than I look in the pic LOL. I am still thinking of things to buy and soon, very soon, need to weigh everything so I can decide what I want enough to carry it. Onward.
Training is one thing. Setting up our itinerary is another. It is equally challenging and engaging. We want to walk into Santiago with Elaine's daughter Renee and niece Julie who will be walking longer days and a different route. That gave us one set point because they know they'll arrive in Lavacola, the night before Santiago, on Wednesday October 14. Our goal is to walk at least 100km and not more than 8 miles a day. With help from Peg and Pam's memories of the route, since they both walked it before, and many website and guidebook helps, here is what we selected.
Next research project was to find accommodations for each night. The three of us divvied up the 12 nights on the Camino itself, plus a night in mid-town Madrid, one at the Madrid airport, and 3 in Basque country. It took us lots of emails back and forth and lots of website research.
We found many cool places to reserve. We will send more photos when we get there so you can see if our choices were spectacularly good, or just an adventure.
While we are training in hot Florida, Pam is training in equally hot Fredericksburg VA, walking up and down the hills at Mary Washington university in her neighborhood. In addition to our training walks, we have been taking lots of other steps to be ready for weeks of walking across part of Spain.
Peg does aqua fitness training at the community pool with friends most mornings before walking with Russ and Stela. Elaine's daughter and niece will be on the Camino at the same time as us but doing longer days and a different route until we meet up on the last day to walk into Santiago together. Elaine and her niece chat by phone while they walk once a week. We also do yoga, line dance, and stretch-stength-balance classes, lots of gardening and yard work, and a personal trainer. We are on this, Folks. Training is part of the Camino adventure! |
